Practical resources to understand your community’s local capacity for cycling
In 2024, City Thread embarked on a journey in critical-constructive social science research through a project with the Urban Cycling Institute. The research project explored the governance and local capacity dynamics underlying cycling infrastructure development and implementation, and
City Thread’s influence on capacity building in US cities. To this end, a case study in Bentonville, Arkansas–one of the places where City Thread uses their Accelerated Mobility Playbook–was conducted. Following the case study in 2025, City Thread and the Urban Cycling Institute decided to co-develop a suite of practical resources that conveys the research methods and findings in an actionable and usable way for practitioners. As such, this Workbook, accompanied by a set of short videos, were designed to help your city better understand its local capacity for cycling and the role civic leadership plays, guiding next steps.
