Conducted and translated by Inés Alveano
In the quest to create safer and healthier cities, the “Planeando la ciudad segura y saludable – Programa de Liderazgo | Planning the Safe and Healthy City – Leadership Programme” offers new opportunities for the Spanish audience. This Leadership Programme aims to unravel urban mobility on foot, by bicycle, and by public transport from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. Together, we examine the impacts of history, public policies, infrastructure, urban planning, and culture within the context of urban mobility in the Netherlands. Through immersive activities and real-world experiences, students like Francisco Martínez Torres, from Morelia, México (Leadership Programme 2024) have transformed their perspectives on urban mobility. Join us as we explore their reflections and insights, showcasing the profound impact of this unique programme.
What would you recommend to people interested in taking the course?
That they are open to enriching experiences. Even people who are not into the topic of mobility can learn a lot. You get to know other cultures, people of various nationalities, as well as very well-trained teachers. You learn not only from the speakers, but also from your colleagues.

Which activities did you enjoy the most? Why?
The combination between theoretical lessons in the classroom (by the way, in a beautiful University) and what was done in the field. Analyzing since our arrival at the airport* and receiving personalized public transport cards. Understanding and seeing a mobility system that works perfectly.
Is there any learning you would like to highlight?
Visiting Amsterdam with the course as a framework allows you to learn about the perfect integration of all mobility systems. It is not the same if you go as a tourist. Knowing how the connection between bike and public transport is made. Get to a central station and see all the mobility systems. Leave your bike in a free and secure parking lot and be able to take the bus or subway.
I also liked the activity of putting ourselves in each other’s shoes. For example, public transit leaders advocating on behalf of vulnerable groups or speaking from the position of decision makers, etc. In general, I found the entire course fantastic.
Did you experience anything you didn’t expect?
I had expectations regarding what Amsterdam was, and what its mobility was like, but I was surprised. It helped me a lot to enrich my knowledge. Some things I confirmed and others I was very surprised. I loved seeing boys and girls on bicycles. I was happy to learn from the professors about other models, or what is done in other parts of the world. Anyway, I loved it.
Anything else you would like to comment on?
I was very pleased that the public transit leaders from my city and my State who are interested in improving their service attended the program and to know that they also broke many paradigms by being there. I liked experiencing with them in this workshop and meeting all the other colleagues. I want to thank Ines Alveano for the opportunity. The fact that she met us at the airport with our public transport cards made the experience start from there. Using the bike every day definitely changed our perspective, and we even lost a few pounds.
*Note: His group was greeted at the airport by the Leadership Program coordinator. This is possible for groups of 5 or more people, upon prior agreement.
