In the quest to create safer and healthier cities, the “Planeando la ciudad segura y saludable – Programa de Liderazgo | Planning the Safe and Healthy City – Leadership Programme” offers new opportunities for the Spanish audience. This Leadership Programme aims to unravel urban mobility on foot, by bicycle, and by public transport from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. Together, we examine the impacts of history, public policies, infrastructure, urban planning, and culture within the context of urban mobility in the Netherlands. Through immersive activities and real-world experiences, students like Grace Gomes (Leadership Programme 2024) have transformed their perspectives on urban mobility. Join us as we explore their reflections and insights, showcasing the profound impact of this unique programme.
What activities did you like the most during the course? Why?
The structure of the course. I found it very interesting to see the theory and to see the practice. It’s not just seeing, but participating, walking, using the city in different ways. On foot, by metro, by tram, by bicycle. For me it was very important to see the integration between the different systems. To see and feel in practice. That makes all the difference. To see that it is possible to transform cities if the necessary will is there.

Is there any learning you would like to highlight?
For a person used to living in cities designed around the car, it is difficult to come here and have a reality shock. A person can know what needs to be done, but the important thing is how to do it in practice. People experience it and then they have the desire to come back and make it possible. That’s why practice is fundamental. Because we have lived and experienced it. We have realised that it is good. Those of us who are here in Salvador de Bahia, both people from the municipality and people from the state, are going to work together to find out which areas of the city can serve as pilot projects so that others can see what is possible. We have the great advantage that a party was elected that proposed cycle lanes.
Did you experience anything you didn’t expect?
Everything revolves around that. We knew that we would be cycling. I was particularly mindful that my physical condition was not the best. I hadn’t cycled for a long time. For me, Grace – not the professional, but the person – it was very important that I set out to overcome my physical condition. It wasn’t fear. First: I didn’t expect to cycle so much, and second: to cycle in the city outside the centre; to cycle in other areas. It was very interesting. Nor did I expect to get to know a (small) city in the metropolitan region. With it, the demonstration that cycling is integrated with other public transport. To get to know the public bicycle parking next to the train station and the metro. To know that some people have two bicycles that they use together with the train, metro or bus on their daily journeys. One at the start of their journey, one at the end. It is not only integrated in terms of fares, but also physically. For me, a person who works with public transport and integration, it was very interesting to see that this is possible.
What would you recommend to people interested in taking the course?
To take the course. So that they can feel in practice what they learn in theory. This is a great advantage. The best thing is to experience the city with your own body. The experience with other cyclists during rush hour. Getting to know the shared roads and the segregated roads. It was perfect. I highly recommend this experience. For me it was a gift, both from a professional and personal point of view.
Anything else you would like to comment on?
We would like to bring a group of people to experience it. Hopefully there will be a course for Brazilian managers, one that can be in Portuguese, that also includes the experiential parts. There are other cities that are being advised by the World Bank. We would love it if they could also join, to achieve substantial changes.
