In the quest to create safer and healthier cities, the “Planeando la ciudad segura y saludable – Programa de Liderazgo | Planning the Safe and Healthy City – Leadership Programme” offers new opportunities for the Spanish audience. This Leadership Programme aims to unravel urban mobility on foot, by bicycle, and by public transport from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. Together, we examine the impacts of history, public policies, infrastructure, urban planning, and culture within the context of urban mobility in the Netherlands. Through immersive activities and real-world experiences, students like Matías Ghio (Leadership Programme 2024) have transformed their perspectives on urban mobility. Join us as we explore their reflections and insights, showcasing the profound impact of this unique programme.
What activities did you like the most during the course? Why?
What I liked most were the outdoor activities. Learning about the interventions carried out in Amsterdam to improve further the experience of people moving around daily. The intersection where the traffic light was removed (Alexanderplein), and the other where the infrastructure was slightly modified to facilitate the flow of people on bicycles at the traffic light crossing (Mr. Visserplein). That is not so easy to see on the internet, or in books. That experience is not ‘teachable’. It cannot be facilitated in a classroom, or by reading research articles. Not even by watching videos on YouTube. It is a sensory experience.
I also liked the interaction with the rest of the participants: from Mexico, Brazil, Peru (activists, public transport leaders, civil servants). This is out of the academic world. I can’t say that friendships were made, but I definitely now consider them as someone who can listen to me. We are on the same line. We have the same problems and also the same interests. The spark that comes out of that networking can be enriching.

Is there any learning you would like to highlight?
Seeing success stories in practice. How to implement what you may know from theory. From my perspective, there are many things that I already knew, that I had already read or learnt. However, in the course I was able to realise how it materialises. How you see, feel and experience what is recommended by evidence worldwide.

Did you experience anything you didn’t expect?
The most unexpected thing was the activities outside the classroom. Although they were already in the programme, I never imagined how far-reaching they would be. For example, the guided walk with Ana Castán. I didn’t know it would be so far away (I mean, even though it’s in Amsterdam, you get to know places I wouldn’t even visit by chance). It was a wonderful experience. Also, although I knew we would have a bike to use during the week, I didn’t know how important it would be for the street activities.
What would you recommend to people interested in taking the course?
First of all, they should register. Don’t hesitate to do so. It is a course to feel and experience bicycle-centred urbanism. It is to experience a place where, 70 years ago, both sides (government and civil society) showed their intention to initiate a transformation that continues to this day. It has given me a little hope, a sense that it can be done. In other words, it is a week to experience empirically that the bicycle can be given a space in cities. Secondly, to stay close to the university. The atmosphere is very different from the tourist sites, such as the central station and the red light district. Finally, I suggest you visit other cities in the Netherlands to experience the differences. I went to Rotterdam and Utrecht.
Anything else you would like to comment on?
I would like to add that I noticed that there are many similarities between Amsterdam and Buenos Aires. Both the climate and the topography. And I got the feeling that there are places where it is totally possible to boost cycling environments. Buenos Aires could improve a lot with very little. I now live in Barcelona and here bikes play a predominant role. Having a car is a nuisance. I am currently working on the multimedia project ‘In-Visible Streets’, which tries to make the problem of road safety visible. Thanks to the people who were involved in coordinating and delivering the course, both in and out of the classroom. I loved it, it’s like a very well done combo.
