Course Dates 🗓️
A new edition of our flagship course, the program that started it all, now in its second decade.
This course will explore and examine the impacts of history, policy, infrastructure, planning, and culture within the context of cycling in the Netherlands.
Using Amsterdam as a living lab and case, the course provides participants with a host of skills on how to develop and foster cycling cities and insights on what this means. We discuss history and culture to policy and human behavior, the Dutch Bicycle Plan, institutional frameworks, and the use of data collection as strategic instruments.
The program invites everyone to bring and share their personal views and experiences on planning, policy, leadership, and organizing change.
By the end of this course, participants will have:
- Conducted research to uncover unexpected aspects of urban mobility
- Gained first hand experience in one of the world’s top cycling cities, and co-created knowledge by comparing and contrasting it with other experiences
- Built a network of academics and professionals in the field
- Had intensive discussions about change in urban mobility and public spaces
Who Is This Course For?
This course is open to professionals, civil servants, non-profits, students, researchers, and decision makers.
Learning format: This ‘flipped classroom’ course will include one to two plenary sessions per day with key guest experts and academics including Tim Verlaan, Nicole den Braver, Luca Bertolini, Marco te Brömmelstroet, and Meredith Glaser. These sessions will be combined with semi-structured independent fieldwork, small group discussions, and a final workshop.
Why Amsterdam?🚲
Amsterdam has been the stage of many urban changes, some more successful than others, but cycling has managed to retain a significant share of mobility over time. The city offers to this day a variety of landscapes, spaces, and stories that make it the perfect place to discuss and test what makes urban environments great for all – it is the ideal living lab. With this course, we will explore the city through a critical lens, and understand how different forces have shaped different corners of Amsterdam for the past several decades.
You’ll benefit if you:
- Have solid technical background but limited cycling-specific knowledge.
- Need to design for users whose needs you don't fully understand
- Want to move beyond basic bike lane design to integrated cycling systems
- Seek European best practices applicable to your city's context
